According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, Colombia region was struck by an earthquake of 6.4 magnitudes on January 19,2024 Friday. EMSC reported that it was centered 115 Kilometers deep.
The earthquake epicenter was located in the Risaralda department, near the Pereira City. Different cities felt earthquakes including Medellin, Cali, and Bogota. As yet there are no reports of major injuries or casualties, but some buildings have been damaged due to this earthquake.
This current situation is monitored by the Colombian Geological Survey and they have issued a warning of tsunami for the Pacific coast of the country. Since then, the warning has been revoked.
Colombia, which is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes. On average each year the country faces an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or greater.
Colombia faced a major earthquake in 2015, the magnitude was 7.2. In that earthquake, almost 26 people were killed and more than a hundred injured.
